Thank You for Your Support

Without you -- the Floyd County community and our friends and family far afield -- the work of this organization would be impossible. Your membership, financial donations, contributions of your time and of the historical records and items from your family, makes this organization what it is.

We would like to take a moment to wish you all a very merry Christmas, a happy holiday season, and an exciting start to your new year. We hope you will stop by and visit us next year for a view of our upcoming Special Exhibit -- “Wars Hot and Cold” Part 1, a focus on Floyd County from the end of WWII until the end of the Eisenhower Administration. We are very much looking forward to this new exhibit and, in the meantime, hope you will visit us online at www.floydhistoricalsociety.com.

Make and End-of-Year Donation Today!

It's not too late to support your favorite Historical Society with a financial contribution today!

When it comes to donating, you have several options:

Give the gift that keeps on giving and make a donation In Honor of a loved one for the holiday. Be sure to include their name and address in the NOTES section if you would like a Christmas Card acknowledging your donation sent to them!

Make a donation In Memory of a dearly departed. Again, be sure to include a name and address for the purposes of sending an acknowledgement Christmas Card.

Mail your donation via USPS to the FCHS at P.O. Box 292, Floyd, VA  24091. You can download and print this convenient donation form.

Can't make a financial donation at this time? We have lots of volunteer opportunities available!

"Donating time not only helps the community, but may also boost your mental health and wellness.

In this season of giving, your family may be thinking about ways you can give back. Choosing a volunteer activity can be one of the best things you’ll do both for your community and you.

Benefits of getting involved

You've probably heard about the mental health benefits of volunteering: People who donate their time to a worthy cause are more connected to others, and thus less likely to feel lonely or depressed. Researchers now think there are likely physical benefits as well. People who volunteer report lower stress levels, and a study last year from Carnegie Mellon University found that older adults who volunteer for at least 200 hours a year decrease their risk of high blood pressure by 40 percent."

Get Involved!

Here are some specific ways to volunteer your precious time in 2020

Come to the January 18 organizational meeting at 10:30am at the Farm Bureau Building to find out all about our volunteer opportunities and sign up for some.

Become a Docent - We need docents to greet visitors at the museum from April - December. The hours that we are open are Thursday and Friday, 12pm-4pm and Saturday from 11am-3pm. If you can commit to being a docent once a week, or even once a month for one of these 4-hour shifts, we would be ever so grateful! Please contact Connie Mitchell at cmitchel@swva.net or (540) 808-7783 for more information.

Humidification of Courthouse Documents - We are also looking for a clean space that we can use to set up the document humidification project. It would be helpful if this space were in a place that volunteers could access on a regular basis. We have over 40,000 Floyd County Courthouse documents that need to be humidified and cataloged. This project may take years and we need your time and space to make it happen. Please contact Ann Shank, FCHS Archivist, to discuss possible support on this project. annshank0419@aol.com or (540) 745-8488.

Cataloging Historical Items, Images, and Documents - Interested in History and specifically the history of Floyd County? We need volunteer catalog registrars to assist in cataloging our backlog of historical items, images and documents in order to make them available in our new state-of-the-art computer system. Our hope is to be able to make research into the museum's collection easy for laymen and professional historians alike. Some computer experience is helpful. Visit our very small but growing online research catalog for a sample of the results of this labor. Contact Ann Shank, FCHS Archivist, to find out more annshank0419@aol.com or (540) 745-8488.

Housekeeping - Looking for a simple and incredibly important way to support the Historical Society's efforts? The museum needs someone to tend to it's very fundamental cleaning and stocking needs. Keep your own schedule and keep the place shining and we'll shine along with you. Please contact Connie Mitchell, FCHS Secretary, for more information. cmitchel@swva.net or (540) 808-7783.

Shop Keeper and Order Fulfillment - Now that we have both an in-house and online shop, we need help keeping organized and fullfilling order (packaging and mailing). This job does require some level of comfort with computers, but is for minimal hours per week, even less after the holidays. Responsibilities include managing online stock, printing packing slips and packaging orders for shipment. Very helpful if you live near town. If you are interested, contact Amy Avery at info@floydhistoricalsociety.com for more information.

Our January 18 planning meeting will focus on organizing our activities and designating responsibilities. Please come and attend to find out the scope of what we have planned for the year and to get involved using the special skills you love to share.
