“Traditional Folk Culture of Southwest Virginia”

By Ricky Cox

The presentation on “Traditional Folk Culture of Southwest Virginia” begins with a discussion of Oral Folklore, including dialect; proverbial expressions; riddles; and folk narratives, like jokes and legends. Customary Folklore, including superstitions and beliefs associated with daily life, for example following signs for planting, harvesting, and managing livestock; and beliefs and practices connected to significant life events (birth, marriage, death) will be discussed briefly. The program will conclude with a few minutes of music, which like many folk traditions encompasses both oral and customary folklore.

Thank You Finn Graphics

The Floyd County Historical Society sends a big THANK YOU to Andy Finn and his associates at Finn Graphics for new signs showing the hours the museum will be open this year.  Andy knew Gerald Via, a member of the Historical Society who recently passed away, and he wanted to make this donation of time and talents in Gerald’s memory.

Be looking out for an announcement coming soon notifying the public of the opening date for the museum — sometime in June.  Hours will be Friday and Saturday 12:00 – 4:00 or by appointment.
