The Floyd County Historical Society, Inc. The Floyd County Historical Society was organized in 1976 as part of
the nation’s Bicentennial Celebration. The Historical Society’s mission
is to preserve local history, serve as custodian of historical gifts, and
provide educational outreach.
The Society encourages interest in the history of Floyd County through
the collection, preservation, and stewardship of significant historic materials.
Educational efforts include publications, community outreach, exhibits,
and six educational programs each year.
As part of the six monthly meetings, the Society features programs of
local historic interest. Recent programs have focused on the following
subjects: “History of the Chestnut Tree,” the “Wood Family
History,” “Rocker Beater Looms and Weaving,” and “Floyd County Funeral
History.” Visitors are welcome at meetings.
The Society assembled historical research and architectural data to
publish the “Floyd Historic Walking Tour” brochure. The publication
highlights the history of Floyd from 1831, when the first courthouse at
Jacksonville was established.
The Society recently partnered with Four-H and Floyd County Public Schools
in conducting a “Living History” essay contest. An outgrowth of that
has been the creation of a local history curriculum aligned with the Standards
of Learning.
Also underway, is a project to document every cemetery in Floyd County
– including ones that are small and almost-forgotten. The Society appreciates
assistance with this and other projects.
The Society currently maintains a substantial archive of historic artifacts,
documents, and photographs. Portions of the archive are available
through the Floyd County Historical Society Museum. With grant
funds, the Society has been able to establish an office and do museum-quality
archival preservation for its collections. This has included cataloging
and using best practices for acid-free storage. An important part of this
archival preservation work has been digitization of over 1500 historic
photographs.
The Historical Society is a 501 ( c) 3 tax-exempt, non-profit public charity, and continues to receive and encourage gifts, endowments, and bequests.
